Tamaqua Borough is a borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,107 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schuylkill County.
History
Tamaqua was founded in 1832 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The town was named after the Native American word for "land of the beaver". The town was originally a mining town, and the first coal mine was opened in 1832. The town grew rapidly, and by 1835 it had a population of over 1,000.
The town was incorporated as a borough in 1845. During the 19th century, Tamaqua was a major coal mining center, and the town was home to several large coal companies. The town was also home to several iron and steel mills, and the town was a major producer of iron and steel products.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,846, and the median income for a family was $38,929. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $16,945.
