Sugarcreek Borough is a borough located in Venango County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the northwestern corner of the state, approximately 30 miles south of Erie. The borough is part of the Oil City, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Sugarcreek Borough was 1,845.
History
Sugarcreek Borough was founded in 1876. The borough was named after the nearby Sugar Creek, which was named for the abundance of sugar maple trees in the area. The first settlers in the area were of German descent, and the borough was originally known as Germania. The first post office in the area was established in 1877.
In the late 19th century, the borough was a center of the oil industry. The first oil well in the area was drilled in 1876, and the first refinery was built in 1878. The oil industry brought a great deal of wealth to the area, and the borough quickly grew in size and population.
Geography
Sugarcreek Borough is located at 41°25'N 79°45'W (41.4167, -79.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the northwestern corner of Venango County, approximately 30 miles south of Erie. It is bordered by the boroughs of Clintonville to the north, Oil City to the east, and Pleasantville to the south. The borough is also bordered by the townships of Sugarcreek to the west and Cherrytree to the northwest.
Economy
The economy of Sugarcreek Borough is largely based on the oil industry. The borough is home to several oil refineries, as well as a number of oil-related businesses. The borough is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a steel mill.
In addition to the oil and manufacturing industries, the borough is home to a number of retail businesses, including several restaurants, grocery stores, and other shops. The borough is also home to a number of professional services, including doctors, lawyers, and accountants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 677.5 per square mile (262.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
