Steelton borough Summary

Steelton Borough is a borough located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,384 at the 2010 census.

History

Steelton Borough was founded in 1866 by the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The company was founded by William H. Fink, who had previously worked for the Cambria Iron Company. The company was the first to produce steel rails in the United States. The town was named after the steel industry, and the borough was incorporated in 1872.
The Pennsylvania Steel Company was the largest employer in the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Steelton had become a major industrial center, with a population of over 10,000. The town was home to a variety of industries, including steel mills, machine shops, and foundries.
In the early 20th century, Steelton was a major center of the labor movement. The town was home to several labor unions, including the United Steelworkers of America and the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers. The town was also the site of several strikes, including the Steelton Strike of 1909.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,384 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,521.7 people per square mile (1,749.2/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 1,921.7 per square mile (741.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 18.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,945.
