History

The area that is now Southmont was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The first settlers were the families of John and Jacob Kline, who arrived in 1790. The Klines were followed by other German families, including the Bauers, the Fischers, the Schaeffers, and the Schmidts. The area was known as Klinesville until 1845, when it was renamed Southmont after the South Mountain range that runs through the area.
In 1846, the first post office was established in Southmont. The first school was built in 1848, and the first church was built in 1851. The first bridge across the Susquehanna River was built in 1854.
In 1871, the borough of Southmont was officially incorporated. The first mayor was John Kline, who served from 1871 to 1875.

Southmont is located in the southeastern corner of Montour County, Pennsylvania. It is bordered by the townships of West Hemlock, Liberty, and Anthony. The borough is situated along the Susquehanna River and is part of the Susquehanna Valley region.
The borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and hot, humid summers.
