Somerset Borough is a borough located in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,277 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Somerset County.
History
Somerset Borough was founded in 1795 and was originally known as "Somerset Courthouse". The town was named after the county of Somerset, which was named after the English county of Somerset. The town was laid out in 1795 by surveyor John Stoy and was incorporated as a borough in 1804.
The town was an important stop on the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, which was built in the early 1800s. The canal was used to transport goods and people between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The canal was eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the mid-1800s.
The town was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, which was used to help slaves escape to freedom in the northern states. The town was home to several prominent abolitionists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Harriet Tubman.

Somerset Borough is located at 40°0′25″N 79°3′25″W (40.006944, -79.056944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Somerset Borough is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a steel mill, and a plastics factory.
The town is also home to several educational institutions, including the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,277 people, 2,541 households, and 1,619 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,093.2 people per square mile (1,967.2/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 2,213.2 per square mile (854.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $39,917. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,917.
