Shippensburg borough Summary
Shippensburg Borough is a borough located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,492 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Shippensburg was founded in 1730 by a group of German immigrants led by Peter Shippen. The town was originally known as Shippensburgh, but the name was changed to Shippensburg in 1814. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1832.
Shippensburg was an important stop on the Cumberland Valley Railroad, which connected Harrisburg to the west with Hagerstown, Maryland to the east. The railroad was completed in 1837 and was a major factor in the growth of the town.
Geography
Shippensburg is located at 40°7′17″N 77°30′45″W (40.121400, -77.512550). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Shippensburg is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The town is also home to Shippensburg University, a public university with an enrollment of over 5,000 students.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,492 people, 2,072 households, and 1,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,093.8 people per square mile (1,579.2/km2). There were 2,232 housing units at an average density of 1,711.5 per square mile (661.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 47.7% were non-families. 36.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 17.2% under the age of 18, 28.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
