Borough of Scalp Level is a borough located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the borough population was 545.
History
The area that is now Scalp Level was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Irish immigrants. The town was originally known as "Scalp Level Station" and was a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad. The town was officially incorporated as a borough in 1891.
Geography
Scalp Level is located at 40°25'45" North, 78°51'45" West (40.429167, -78.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Scalp Level is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a small industrial park.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (715.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 756.2 per square mile (293.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.45% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, and 0.18% from two or more races.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
