Sayre Borough is a borough located in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along the Susquehanna River and is part of the Sayre-Athens Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,587 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Sayre Borough was first settled in 1787 by William Sayre, a Quaker from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He purchased a large tract of land from the local Native Americans and established a trading post. The area was known as "Sayre's Settlement" and was the first permanent settlement in Bradford County.
In 1891, the borough of Sayre was incorporated. The borough was named after William Sayre and was the first borough in Bradford County. The borough was originally a small farming community, but it soon developed into a major industrial center. The Lehigh Valley Railroad was built through the borough in 1892, and the Sayre Car Works was established in 1895. The car works produced railroad cars for the Lehigh Valley Railroad and other railroads.
The borough continued to grow and prosper throughout the 20th century. The Sayre Car Works closed in the 1950s, but the borough continued to attract new businesses and industries. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,587 people, 2,310 households, and 1,521 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,637.5 people per square mile (1,790.2/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 2,093.3 per square mile (807.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,310 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
