Ridgway borough Summary

Ridgway Borough is a borough located in Elk County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elk County.

History

Ridgway Borough was founded in 1843 by William Ridgway, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Ridgwayville, but the name was changed to Ridgway in 1868. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1874.
Ridgway was an important stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad, which ran through the town from 1883 to 1971. The railroad was a major employer in the area and helped to spur the growth of the town.
Ridgway was also the site of a major coal mining operation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The coal mines provided employment for many of the town's residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,072 households, and 645 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,093.2 people per square mile (807.3/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 962.2 per square mile (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.24% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
