History
Rheems was first settled in 1730 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Rheemsburg” and was named after the Rhein River in Germany. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
Rheems was an important stop along the Susquehanna River during the 19th century. It was a major port for the shipment of coal, lumber, and other goods. The town was also home to several mills, including a paper mill, a flour mill, and a sawmill.

Rheems is located at 40°7′17″N 76°20′17″W (40.1214, -76.3379). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,845.
