Pottstown borough Summary
Pottstown Borough is a borough located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated along the Schuylkill River, about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The population was 22,377 at the 2010 census.
History
Pottstown was founded in 1752 by John Potts, a blacksmith and ironmaster. He purchased a large tract of land from William Penn and named it Pottsgrove. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In 1761, Pottsgrove was incorporated as a borough, and in 1815, it was renamed Pottstown.
The borough was an important center of industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was home to several iron and steel mills, as well as a variety of other manufacturing businesses. The borough was also a major transportation hub, with the Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Canal both passing through it.
Geography
Pottstown is located at 40°14′N 75°37′W (40.23, -75.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Pottstown’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The borough is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Pottstown Metal Works, a steel fabricator, and Pottstown Roller Mills, a grain mill. The borough also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 22,377 people, 8,845 households, and 5,717 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,323.3 people per square mile (2,053.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 2,279.3 per square mile (882.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 79.2% White, 13.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,836. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $30,890 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
