History

The area that is now Port Allegany Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by settlers from Connecticut. The first settler was a man named John McKean, who established a trading post in the area. The area was originally known as McKean’s Settlement, and was later renamed Port Allegany in 1845. The name was chosen to honor the Allegany Indians, who had lived in the area prior to the arrival of the settlers.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1876. During the late 19th century, the borough was a major center for the lumber industry. The lumber industry was the primary source of employment for the residents of the borough.
