Platea Borough is a small borough located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the county, and is bordered by the townships of Hanover, Raccoon, and Independence. The population of Platea Borough was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Platea Borough is located at 40°37'45" North, 80°20'45" West (40.629167, -80.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Ohio River Valley, and is surrounded by rolling hills and wooded areas. The borough is served by two major highways, Interstate 376 and Pennsylvania Route 18.
History
Platea Borough was founded in 1876, and was named after the Platea Creek, which runs through the borough. The creek was named after the Native American word for “flat”, referring to the flat terrain of the area.
The borough was originally a farming community, and the main industry was coal mining. The coal mines were located in the hills surrounding the borough, and the coal was used to fuel the local steel mills.
In the early 1900s, the borough began to experience a population boom, as many immigrants from Eastern Europe and Italy moved to the area to work in the coal mines and steel mills. The population of the borough peaked in the 1950s, when it reached a high of over 3,000 people.

Today, the economy of Platea Borough is largely based on manufacturing and services. The borough is home to several manufacturing companies, including a steel mill, a plastics factory, and a paper mill. The borough also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,145.7 per square mile (443.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,813. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
