Pen Argyl Borough is a small borough located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Lehigh Valley region of the state, approximately 10 miles north of Easton and about 50 miles north of Philadelphia. The borough is part of the Slate Belt, an area known for its slate quarries and slate industry. As of the 2010 census, the population of Pen Argyl was 3,384.

History

The area that is now Pen Argyl was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Dutch immigrants. The town was originally known as “Slate Valley” and was part of Plainfield Township. In 1872, the town was officially incorporated as Pen Argyl, named after a Welsh village. The name was chosen by the first postmaster, John F. Knecht, who was of Welsh descent.
The slate industry was the main source of employment in Pen Argyl for many years. The slate quarries provided jobs for hundreds of people and the slate was used to make roofing tiles, floor tiles, and other products. The industry began to decline in the early 1900s, however, as the demand for slate decreased. By the 1950s, the slate industry had all but disappeared.

Pen Argyl is located at 40°48'N 75°20'W (40.8, -75.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land. Pen Argyl is situated in the Slate Belt region of Pennsylvania, which is known for its slate quarries and slate industry. The borough is located in the Lehigh Valley region of the state, approximately 10 miles north of Easton and about 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

Economy

The economy of Pen Argyl is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The borough is home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.
