Parkesburg borough Summary
Parkesburg Borough is a small borough located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, approximately 25 miles west of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by West Sadsbury Township to the north, Sadsbury Township to the east, Highland Township to the south, and West Fallowfield Township to the west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Parkesburg was 2,569.
History
Parkesburg was founded in 1851 by William Parkes, a Quaker from England. Parkes purchased a large tract of land in the area and laid out the town, naming it after himself. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1864.
In the late 19th century, Parkesburg was a major stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the town grew rapidly. The railroad brought many new businesses to the area, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a canning factory. The town also became a center for the local agricultural industry, with several farms located in the area.
Geography
Parkesburg is located at 39°58'N 75°51'W (39.967, -75.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Piedmont region of Pennsylvania, and is situated in a valley between two ridges. The Octoraro Creek runs through the town, and the borough is located in the Octoraro Creek watershed.
Economy
The economy of Parkesburg is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The borough is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of industrial parks, which house a variety of light manufacturing businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 2,569 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 890.3 per square mile (344.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
