Palmyra borough Summary

Palmyra Borough is a borough located in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Palmyra was founded in 1763 by a group of German immigrants led by Johann Thomas Schrack. The town was originally known as Schrackstown, but was later renamed Palmyra after the ancient city in Syria. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1845.
Palmyra was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the town's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. The town was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863, when Confederate forces attempted to capture the town. The Union forces were able to repel the attack and the town remained in Union hands for the remainder of the war.

Geography

Palmyra is located at 40°17'17" North, 76°30'45" West (40.288, -76.512). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Palmyra's economy is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. The town is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,812 people, 1,945 households, and 1,269 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,039.2 people per square mile (1,561.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 1,717.2 per square mile (662.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.83% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,813 versus $23,958 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
