Oval is a small borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, just north of the city of Philadelphia. The population of Oval was 2,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Oval is located at 39°54'45" North, 75°17'45" West (39.912500, -75.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.
History
Oval was founded in 1854 by a group of Quakers who had migrated from the nearby city of Philadelphia. The name of the borough was derived from the shape of the original settlement, which was oval in shape. The borough was incorporated in 1874.
Economy
Oval is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The borough does have a few small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few small retail stores.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the borough. The population density was 9,818.3 people per square mile (3,811.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 3,945.3 per square mile (1,521.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $32,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
