Oberlin is a small borough located in the northwest corner of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, approximately two miles from the border of Carbon County. History
Oberlin was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after the German city of Oberlin, which was the birthplace of one of the founders. The town was incorporated in 1851.
In the late 19th century, Oberlin was a thriving coal mining town. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town's residents. The town also had a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office.
Geography
Oberlin is located at 40°45'45"N, 76°2'45"W (40.7625, -76.0458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is surrounded by the townships of East Union, West Mahanoy, and Rush. The town is situated two miles from the border of Carbon County.

The economy of Oberlin is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Oberlin Mine, which is the largest in the area. The town also has a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,541.7 people per square mile (1,369.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 1,521.7 per square mile (588.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
