Oakmont borough Summary
Oakmont Borough is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh, located along the Allegheny River, about 10 miles northeast of the city. The population was 6,426 at the 2010 census.
History
Oakmont Borough was founded in 1889 by a group of businessmen from Pittsburgh. The borough was named after the Oakmont Country Club, which was founded in the same year. The club was named after the oak trees that lined the Allegheny River.
The borough was originally a summer resort community, and many of the original homes were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The borough was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 20th century, Oakmont was a popular destination for wealthy Pittsburghers. The borough was home to several large estates, including the estate of industrialist Henry Clay Frick.
Geography
Oakmont Borough is located at 40°31'17" North, 79°51'45" West (40.521445, -79.862445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Oakmont Borough is home to several businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The borough is also home to the Oakmont Country Club, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the United States.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,541 people, 2,845 households, and 1,717 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,541.2 people per square mile (2,139.7/km2). There were 2,976 housing units at an average density of 2,478.2 per square mile (955.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.77% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $56,250. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,945. About 3.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
