North York borough Summary
North York Borough is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,589 at the 2010 census. North York is located in the heart of York County, and is bordered by Manchester Township to the north, York Township to the east, West Manchester Township to the south, and Springettsbury Township to the west.
History
North York was first settled in 1741 by German immigrants. The borough was incorporated in 1887 and was named after the city of York, England. The borough was originally part of Manchester Township, but was separated in 1887.
Geography
North York is located at 40°3'25"N 76°45'17"W (40.056944, -76.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
North York is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The borough is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,589 people, 1,845 households, and 1,213 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,541.3 people per square mile (2,521.2/km2). There were 1,919 housing units at an average density of 2,717.2 per square mile (1,051.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.17% White, 0.78% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.63% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,972. Males had a median income of $36,944 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
