North Philipsburg Summary

Philipsburg, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Centre County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Nittany Valley, approximately 8 miles east of State College and is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Philipsburg was 2,890 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Philipsburg was first settled in 1786 by John Philips, a Revolutionary War veteran. Philipsburg was incorporated as a borough in 1864. The town was named after Philips, who was the first settler in the area.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for coal mining. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town until the 1950s, when the mines began to close.

Geography

Philipsburg is located at 40°51'17" North, 78°1'17" West (40.854722, -78.021389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Philipsburg is largely based on tourism and retail. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries. The town also has a number of antique stores and flea markets.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,890 people, 1,214 households, and 745 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,400.2 people per square mile (926.2/km2). There were 1,312 housing units at an average density of 1,072.2 per square mile (414.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,214 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $16,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
