New Freedom borough Summary

Freedom Borough is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Freedom Borough was first settled in 1750 by German immigrants. The town was originally known as "Freydorf" and was incorporated as a borough in 1873. The name was changed to Freedom in 1876.

Geography

Freedom Borough is located at 39°45'45" North, 76°45'45" West (39.7625, -76.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Freedom Borough is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,637.2 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 1,062.2 per square mile (408.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
