New Cumberland borough Summary

New Cumberland Borough is a small borough located in the south-central region of Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is situated in the northern part of York County, and is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The borough is bordered by the Susquehanna River to the east, and is located approximately 10 miles west of the state capital of Harrisburg. As of the 2010 census, the population of New Cumberland was 7,277.

History

The area that is now New Cumberland was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “New Berlin”, and was incorporated as a borough in 1831. The name was changed to New Cumberland in 1836, in honor of the Duke of Cumberland, who had recently visited the area.
In the late 1800s, the town was a major hub for the Pennsylvania Canal, which connected the Susquehanna River to the Ohio River. The canal was a major transportation route for goods and people, and the town grew rapidly as a result. The canal was eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1800s, and the town continued to grow and develop.

Geography

New Cumberland is located at 40°12'N 76°53'W (40.20, -76.88). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of which is land.
The borough is located in the northern part of York County, and is bordered by the Susquehanna River to the east. The borough is located approximately 10 miles west of the state capital of Harrisburg.

Economy

New Cumberland’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The borough is home to several large manufacturing companies, including the New Cumberland Foundry, which produces cast iron products, and the New Cumberland Paper Company, which produces paper products. The borough is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 7,277 people, 2,945 households, and 1,919 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,619.3 people per square mile (2,174.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 2,364.2 per square mile (912.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
