New Baltimore Borough is a small borough located in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 20 miles south of Harrisburg. The borough is bordered by Greene Township to the north, Washington Township to the east, and Letterkenny Township to the south and west. The population of New Baltimore Borough was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

New Baltimore Borough was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Baltimore, Maryland. The town was originally known as “Baltimore”, but the name was changed to “New Baltimore” in 1851 to avoid confusion with the city of Baltimore. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1872.
The town was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for nearby cities such as Chambersburg and Hagerstown. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Geography

New Baltimore Borough is located at 39°51'N 77°25'W (39.851, -77.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Appalachian Mountains, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The town is situated in the Cumberland Valley, which is part of the Great Appalachian Valley.

Economy

The economy of New Baltimore Borough is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay.
The town is also a popular tourist destination, as it is located near several state parks and recreational areas. The nearby Michaux State Forest is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,637.3 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.3 per square mile (443.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
