Muir is a small borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southern part of the state, approximately two miles south of Pottsville. The population of Muir was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Muir was founded in 1845 by John Muir, a Scottish immigrant who had come to the United States in 1841. Muir had purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it into a small village. He named the village after himself and it quickly grew into a thriving community.
Muir was incorporated as a borough in 1876. The town was known for its coal mining industry, which provided employment for many of its residents. The coal industry was the main source of income for the town until the 1950s, when the industry began to decline.
Geography
Muir is located at 40°45'17" North, 76°14'45" West (40.754722, -76.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Muir’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, which produces a variety of products, including furniture and clothing.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,633.3 people per square mile (1,400.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 1,547.3 per square mile (597.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
