Mountain Top Summary

Mountain Top is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Fairview Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Pocono Mountains region of the state, and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mountain Top was 10,982.

History

Mountain Top was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Irish immigrants. The area was originally known as “Hemlock Grove” due to the abundance of hemlock trees in the area. The name was changed to Mountain Top in 1845 when the post office was established.
The area was primarily a farming community until the late 19th century when coal mining became the primary industry. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the area until the mid-20th century when the industry began to decline.

Geography

Mountain Top is located at 41°10'25" North, 75°50'45" West (41.173611, -75.845833). It is situated in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania, and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mountain Top’s economy is largely based on tourism and retail. The area is home to several ski resorts, golf courses, and other recreational activities. The area also has several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,982 people, 4,541 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 597.2/sq mi (230.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
