Mount Cobb Summary

Cobb, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains, approximately 10 miles south of Scranton. The population of Cobb was 1,845 at the 2000 census.

History

Cobb was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was named after the Cobb family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a coal mining town. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town until the 1950s, when the mines began to close.

Cobb is located at 41°25'25" North, 75°37'45" West (41.423, -75.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Cobb is largely based on tourism. The town is home to several ski resorts, including Big Bear Ski Resort and Montage Mountain Ski Resort. The town also has several restaurants, bars, and shops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,637.2 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,145.2 per square mile (441.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
