Morgantown Summary

Morgantown is a borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Morgantown was founded in 1761 by John Morgan, a Welsh immigrant. The town was originally known as Morgan's Town, but the name was changed to Morgantown in 1812. The town was incorporated in 1832.
Morgantown was a major stop on the Reading Railroad, which ran through the town from 1842 to 1976. The railroad was a major factor in the town's growth and development.

Geography

Morgantown is located at 40°17'45"N 75°59'45"W (40.295833, -75.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Morgantown's economy is largely based on agriculture and light industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,072.2 people per square mile (1,571.2/km2). There were 1,133 housing units at an average density of 1,619.2 per square mile (625.2/km2).
