Milroy Summary

Milroy is a borough located in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lewistown, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Milroy was first settled in 1790 by John and Mary Miller, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Millerstown, but was later changed to Milroy in 1851 in honor of Major General Robert Milroy, who was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War.
The town was incorporated in 1864 and has remained relatively unchanged since then. Milroy was a major stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad, which ran through the town until the 1950s.

Geography

Milroy is located at 40°41'17" North, 77°30'45" West (40.6879, -77.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Milroy's economy is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops.
The town is also home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay. The town also has a few small manufacturing businesses, which produce a variety of products, including furniture, clothing, and other items.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 152 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (715.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 786.2 per square mile (303.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races.
There were 221 households, out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,845.
