Mather Summary
Mather is a small borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the western part of the state, approximately 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. History
Mather was founded in 1876 by William Mather, a wealthy industrialist from Pittsburgh. He purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it into a residential community. The town was named after him and incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Mather was a thriving industrial center. It was home to several factories, including a steel mill, a brickyard, and a glassworks. The town also had a number of stores and businesses, including a bank, a post office, and a hotel.
Geography
Mather is located at 40°33'N 79°59'W (40.55, -79.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Mather's economy is largely based on its proximity to Pittsburgh. Many of its residents commute to the city for work. The borough also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,155.7 per square mile (446.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,945.
