Markleysburg borough Summary

History

Markleysburg Borough is a small borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the state, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. The borough was founded in 1876 and was named after the Markley family, who were early settlers in the area.
The area was first settled in the late 1700s by German and Scots-Irish immigrants. The first settlers were attracted to the area due to its abundance of natural resources, including coal, timber, and iron ore. The area was also known for its fertile soil, which made it ideal for farming.
The first industry in the area was coal mining, which began in the early 1800s. The coal industry was the primary source of employment for the residents of Markleysburg Borough until the mid-1900s. The coal industry declined in the late 1900s, and the borough began to transition to a more service-based economy.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1876. The first mayor of Markleysburg Borough was John Markley, who served from 1876 to 1878. The borough has had a total of nine mayors since its incorporation.
