History
Marienville was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants led by John Marien. The town was named after him and was originally known as Marien’s Settlement. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1875.
Marienville was a logging town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber companies, including the Marienville Lumber Company, which was founded in 1875. The lumber industry was the main source of employment for the town’s residents.
Geography
Marienville is located at 41°25'N 79°25'W (41.4167, -79.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Allegheny National Forest and is surrounded by the Allegheny Plateau. The Allegheny River is located to the east of the borough.
Economy
Marienville’s economy is largely based on tourism. The borough is home to several tourist attractions, including the Marienville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes several historic buildings, including the Marienville Hotel, which was built in 1875.
The borough is also home to several outdoor recreation areas, including the Allegheny National Forest, which offers camping, fishing, hunting, and hiking. The Allegheny River is also popular for boating and fishing.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.3 per square mile (265.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,000. About 11.2% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
