Laureldale Borough is a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the county, just south of the city of Reading. The borough is bordered by Muhlenberg Township to the north, Lower Alsace Township to the east, and Cumru Township to the south and west. As of the 2010 census, the population of Laureldale was 4,072.
History
The area that is now Laureldale was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The area was known as “Laurel Dale” and was part of Muhlenberg Township. In 1891, the area was incorporated as a borough. The name was changed to Laureldale in 1895.
The borough was primarily an agricultural community until the early 1900s, when the Reading Railroad began to expand its operations in the area. This led to an influx of new residents and businesses, and the borough began to grow rapidly. By the mid-1900s, Laureldale had become a thriving industrial center, with several factories and businesses located in the borough.
Geography
Laureldale is located at 40°20'45" North, 75°56'45" West (40.3458, -75.9457). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the southeastern part of Berks County, just south of the city of Reading. It is bordered by Muhlenberg Township to the north, Lower Alsace Township to the east, and Cumru Township to the south and west.
Economy
The economy of Laureldale is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The borough is home to several factories and businesses, including a paper mill, a printing company, and a metal fabrication plant. There are also several retail stores and restaurants located in the borough.

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,072 people, 1,717 households, and 1,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,521.3 people per square mile (1,749.2/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 2,053.3 per square mile (793.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
