Lansdale borough Summary

Lansdale Borough is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 16,269 at the 2010 census. The borough is located approximately 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia and is part of the North Penn Valley region that is centered around the borough of Lansdale.

History

Lansdale was founded in 1872 by a group of Philadelphia businessmen who purchased the land from the estate of William Penn. The borough was named after Phillip Lansdale Fox, one of the original investors. The borough was incorporated in 1891 and has since grown to become a thriving community.
The borough has a rich history, with many of its buildings and homes dating back to the 19th century. The Lansdale Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, includes many of these buildings.

Geography

Lansdale Borough is located at 40°14'45" North, 75°17'45" West (40.245833, -75.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Lansdale Borough is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The borough is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the corporate headquarters of the global pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 16,269 people, 6,845 households, and 4,092 families residing in the borough. The population density was 7,072.3 people per square mile (2,731.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 3,093.3 per square mile (1,192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,813 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
