Lampeter Summary
Lampeter is a small borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the county, approximately 8 miles west of the city of Lancaster. The population of Lampeter was 2,845 at the 2000 census.
History
Lampeter was founded in 1734 by a group of Mennonites from Germany. The town was named after the Lampeter Creek, which runs through the area. The creek was named after the Dutch word for “lamp”, which was used to describe the area’s abundance of fireflies.
The town was originally a farming community, and the Mennonites built a meetinghouse in 1737. The meetinghouse was used for religious services and community gatherings.
In the late 19th century, Lampeter began to grow and develop. The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first post office was established in 1892. The town also had a railroad station, which was built in 1894.
Geography
Lampeter is located at 40°3'17" North, 76°14'45" West (40.054722, -76.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Conestoga Valley, which is part of the larger Susquehanna Valley. The Lampeter Creek runs through the town and is a tributary of the Conestoga River.

Lampeter’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. The town also has several small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

As of the 2000 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,093.2 people per square mile (1,579.2/km2). There were 1,145 housing units at an average density of 1,637.2 per square mile (631.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,945.
