History
Kirkwood was founded in 1854 by a group of Quakers from the nearby town of Kirkwood, Delaware. The town was named after the Quaker settlement in Delaware. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a school, a church, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, the town began to expand and industrialize. The Pennsylvania Railroad built a line through the town, and several factories were built, including a paper mill, a brickyard, and a tannery. The town also became a popular summer resort, with several hotels and resorts opening up in the area.

The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
