Kersey is a borough located in Elk County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Marys, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Kersey was founded in 1845 by John Kersey, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Kerseytown, but the name was changed to Kersey in 1876. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Kersey was a major stop on the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway, which ran through the town from 1882 to 1952. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
Geography
Kersey is located at 41°25'17" North, 78°45'45" West (41.4214, -78.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Kersey is a small, rural community with a population of just over 1,000 people. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small manufacturing companies.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
