Kenilworth is a borough located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilkes-Barre–Scranton–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Kenilworth was founded in 1891 by the Lehigh Valley Coal Company. The company purchased the land from the estate of William P. Wilkes, who had owned a large tract of land in the area. The town was named after the English town of Kenilworth, which was the home of the Earl of Leicester. The town was laid out in a grid pattern, with wide streets and large lots.
The first settlers in the area were miners who worked in the coal mines. The town grew rapidly, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving community. The town had a post office, a bank, a hotel, a general store, and several churches.

Geography

Kenilworth is located at 41°14'17" North, 75°51'45" West (41.238, -75.862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Kenilworth's economy is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Lehigh Valley Coal Company's Kenilworth Mine. The mine is one of the largest in the area, and employs hundreds of people.
The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics factory and a paper mill.

The racial makeup of the borough was 97.9% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
