Jermyn Borough is a small borough located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Jermyn Borough was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Jermyn Borough was first settled in the late 1700s by Irish immigrants. The town was originally known as "Irishtown" and was part of the town of Carbondale. In 1876, the town was renamed "Jermyn" after a local landowner, William Jermyn. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1891.

Geography

Jermyn Borough is located at 41°30'N 75°37'W (41.50, -75.62). It is situated in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains and is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Jermyn Borough is largely based on the service industry. The borough is home to several restaurants, bars, and other businesses. The borough also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small factories located in the area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 790 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 1,192.9 per square mile (460.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.02.
