Jefferson Hills Borough is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh and is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 10,619 at the 2010 census.

History

Jefferson Hills Borough was originally part of Elizabeth Township, which was established in 1788. In 1845, the area was split into two townships, Jefferson and Elizabeth. In 1868, the area was incorporated as the Borough of Jefferson. The name was changed to Jefferson Hills in 1975.

Geography

Jefferson Hills Borough is located at 40°17'45" North, 79°59'45" West (40.295833, -79.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 8.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Jefferson Hills Borough is home to several businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The borough is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including a steel mill and a chemical plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,619 people, 4,093 households, and 3,072 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,295.3 people per square mile (499.9/km²). There were 4,258 housing units at an average density of 519.2 per square mile (200.6/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $59,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $23,945. About 2.7% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
