Jeannette Summary

Jeannette is a city located in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, approximately 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. The population was 9,654 at the 2010 census.

History

Jeannette was founded in 1888 by industrialist and philanthropist John A. Roebling. Roebling had previously founded the nearby town of South Fork, and he named Jeannette after his daughter. The city was incorporated in 1889.
In the late 19th century, Jeannette was a major center of glass production, with several glass factories located in the city. The city was also home to the Jeannette Iron and Steel Company, which produced steel products for the railroad industry.

Geography

Jeannette is located at 40°19'45" North, 79°37'45" West (40.329167, -79.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Jeannette's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several factories, including a glass factory, a steel mill, and a paper mill. The city also has several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a Kmart.

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,654 people, 3,945 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,364.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 9.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845.
