Iola Summary

Iola is a small borough located in the northwest corner of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, approximately 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The population of Iola was 1,845 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Iola is located at 40°41'45" North, 79°14'45" West (40.695833, -79.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Iola was founded in 1845 by John Iola, a German immigrant. The town was originally called Iola Station, as it was a stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1875.
The town was named after John Iola's daughter, Iola. The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for coal mining. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the town shifted to a more service-oriented economy.

Economy

Iola's economy is largely based on services and retail. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,619.2 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,133.2 per square mile (438.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
