Hamburg borough Summary

Hamburg Borough is a borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,077 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hamburg Borough was founded in 1786 by a group of German settlers who had arrived in the area in 1754. The settlers named the town after their hometown of Hamburg, Germany. The town was incorporated in 1851 and has remained largely unchanged since then.

Geography

Hamburg Borough is located at 40°31'17" North, 75°59'45" West (40.5214, -75.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hamburg Borough is a small, rural community with a population of just over 4,000 people. The economy of the borough is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,077 people, 1,619 households, and 1,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,521.2 people per square mile (1,749.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 1,919.2 per square mile (737.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.44% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,945.
