The borough is located approximately 10 miles south of Chambersburg and is part of the Chambersburg-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Guilford was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Guilford is located at 39°48'45" North, 77°41'45" West (39.812500, -77.695833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Cumberland Valley, which is part of the Great Appalachian Valley. The valley is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Allegheny Mountains to the west. The valley is drained by the Conococheague Creek, which flows through the borough.
Economy
The economy of Guilford is largely based on agriculture and light manufacturing. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a feed mill, a sawmill, and a furniture factory. The borough also has a number of retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,072.2 people per square mile (1,186.3/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,337.3 per square mile (516.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
