Gibraltar Summary

Gibraltar is a small borough located in the northern part of Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is situated in the northwest corner of Northampton County, and is part of the Lehigh Valley region. The borough is located approximately 10 miles north of Easton, and is bordered by the townships of East Allen, Bushkill, and Plainfield. The population of Gibraltar was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Gibraltar was first settled in 1750 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Gibraltarville”, and was named after the Rock of Gibraltar. The town was officially incorporated in 1845, and was named after the nearby mountain of the same name.

Geography

Gibraltar is located at 40°41'17" North, 75°14'45" West (40.6879, -75.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is located in the northern part of Northampton County, and is part of the Lehigh Valley region.

Economy

Gibraltar’s economy is largely based on agriculture and light industry. The borough is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few small shops. The borough also has a few small manufacturing plants, which produce a variety of products, including furniture, clothing, and electronics.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
