Gap Summary

Gap is a borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, approximately 20 miles east of the city of Lancaster. The population of Gap was 2,717 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Gap is located at 39°59'45" North, 76°2'45" West (39.995833, -76.045556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Gap was first settled in 1737 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as "Gap's Mill" after the local grist mill. The name was changed to Gap in 1845 when the post office was established.
Gap was incorporated as a borough in 1876. The town was a major center for the production of flaxseed oil and linseed oil during the 19th century. The oil was used to make paint, varnish, and linoleum.

Economy

Gap's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Gap is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Gap Railroad Museum, the Gap Historic District, and the Gap Covered Bridge. The town is also home to the Gap Amish Market, which offers a variety of locally-made products.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,072 households, and 745 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,845.2 people per square mile (1,485.2/km2). There were 1,125 housing units at an average density of 1,567.2 per square mile (604.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.81% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.81% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.05.
