Edgewood Summary
Edgewood is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh, located approximately 10 miles east of the city. The population was 2,631 at the 2010 census.
History
Edgewood was originally part of Wilkins Township, which was established in 1788. The area was first settled in the early 1800s by German and Irish immigrants. The first post office was established in 1851, and the borough was incorporated in 1868.
The borough was named after the Edgewood Estate, a large estate owned by the prominent Mellon family. The estate was located on the banks of the Monongahela River and was the site of the first golf course in the area.
Geography
Edgewood is located at 40°25'17" North, 79°51'45" West (40.421400, -79.862400). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Edgewood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The borough is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,631 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,817.2 people per square mile (1,478.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 1,683.2 per square mile (650.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,938. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
