East York Summary
East York is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,217 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
East York was originally part of Springettsbury Township, which was established in 1741. In 1887, the borough of East York was incorporated from a portion of Springettsbury Township. The borough was named for its location east of the city of York.
Geography
East York is located at 39°58'45" North, 76°43'17" West (39.979167, -76.721389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
East York is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The borough is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,217 people, 1,717 households, and 1,093 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,072.2 people per square mile (2,344.2/km2). There were 1,817 housing units at an average density of 2,619.2 per square mile (1,009.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.17% White, 0.86% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
