Dewart Summary

Dewart is a small borough located in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Williamsport. The population of Dewart was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Dewart was founded in 1845 by John Dewart, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Dewartville, but the name was changed to Dewart in 1875. The town was incorporated in 1887.
Dewart was a small farming community until the late 19th century, when the lumber industry began to boom in the area. The lumber industry brought a large influx of people to the area, and the population of Dewart grew rapidly. By the early 20th century, Dewart had become a bustling town with a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a post office, and several stores.

Geography

Dewart is located at 40°48'N 76°45'W (40.80, -76.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dewart's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The town also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Tourism is an important part of Dewart's economy. The town is home to several historic sites, including the Dewart Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes several 19th-century buildings, including the Dewart Hotel, the Dewart Bank, and the Dewart Post Office.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 781.7 per square mile (301.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
