Deer Lake Summary

Deer Lake is a borough located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southern part of the state, about two miles north of the city of Pottsville. The population of Deer Lake was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Deer Lake is located at 40°45'7" North, 76°14'45" West (40.7519, -76.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Deer Lake was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Deerfield”, but the name was changed to “Deer Lake” in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1867.
The town was a major coal mining center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The coal industry declined in the mid-20th century, and the town has since become a bedroom community for Pottsville and other nearby towns.

Economy

Deer Lake’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The town is also home to a few manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,148.6 per square mile (444.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
